On Thursday during Manchester United’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Sevilla, centre back Lisandro Martinez suffered what appears to be a foot issue and had to be substituted out in the 86th minute before eventually being carried off on a stretcher.

Raphael Varane will also miss the match after leaving at half-time with an unknown injury and being replaced by Harry Maguire, joining Luke Shaw and Alejandro Garnacho on an already lengthy injury list.

Varane’s injury

Manchester United have experienced an injury crisis at their core defense position. Star defender Raphael Varane had to leave Thursday’s match against Sevilla at half time with what appears to be more serious injuries than first anticipated.

Old Trafford has suffered an unusually long list of injuries to key players this season, with Donny van de Beek and Alejandro Garnacho currently out due to long-term absences, while Marcus Rashford may miss several games after missing Saturday’s draw with Sevilla.

Due to his suspension, England defender Harry Maguire will miss next Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Brighton, leaving United without Lindelof alongside Luke Shaw or Casemiro as replacements for their FA Cup semi-final match-up. This could leave United with left-back Luke Shaw or midfielder Casemiro filling in as replacements alongside Sweden defender Lindelof as possible options.

Erik ten Hag’s side have suffered two key injuries in recent weeks, which is a setback as they attempt to win three competitions at once, including Premier League and Europa League titles. Erik will need the squad behind him to rise up and meet this formidable task head on.

Martinez’s injury

Manchester United have been dealt a double blow with centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane both out due to injuries picked up in their Europa League quarter-final first leg tie against Sevilla on Thursday night. Both players will miss Thursday’s 2-2 draw if sidelined for any length of time.

After leading United 2-0 in the first leg, Martinez collapsed onto the ground grabbing at his heel. Carriers Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna carried him off, but it appears he may have experienced an Achilles problem which would rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Erik ten Hag has already suffered the loss of Donny van de Beek and Alejandro Garnacho due to long-term injuries this season, forcing him to turn to England star Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof as substitute central defenders while waiting for more reliable options like his preferred central defenders to recover their fitness.

United’s injury crisis

Manchester United are currently facing an injury crisis with World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez and first-choice defender Raphael Varane both suffering injuries during Thursday night’s Europa League quarter-final tie against Sevilla. These two had become pivotal components in Erik ten Hag’s centre-back partnership and therefore their loss would be significant.

Red Devils players such as Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw are currently sidelined due to injury and illness respectively. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has also been prevented from joining England squad due to illness related issues.

Louis van Gaal has struggled to rely on his squad this season as injuries mount up. But on Sunday against Nottingham Forest who face relegation he hopes his squad can put on an impressive showing and end their campaign strongly.

Ten Hag’s response

Erik ten Hag was unaware of the extent of Varane and Martinez’s injuries on Friday but asserts there can be no excuses. Both first-choice centre backs have been ruled out of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest as well as next week’s return leg of their Europa League quarterfinal with Sevilla.

United’s absences could prove costly as they still face FA Cup semifinal and Premier League top four battles to contend with. With both defenders out, United will rely on Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof – two players who have struggled this season – who may take time adjusting.

Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay were absent for Thursday’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla but are expected to return for United’s Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on Super Sunday. If Luke Shaw recovers from his hamstring injury quickly enough, he could offer much-needed competition at right back for United
