Europa League champions Sevilla finish seventh, beat Mourinho Roma
Sevilla maintained their perfect Europa League final record by beating Jose Mourinho’s Roma in a dramatic penalty shootout in Budapest, Hungary, on Wednesday to lift seven trophies in seven games.

Furthermore, Sevilla have won the Europa League five times in ten seasons and won no more than twice as many “other” competitions in Europe as any other club (Liverpool, Inter Milan, Juventus and Atletico Madrid have won three each) . … Sevilla will also qualify for next season’s Champions League, although they will be in the middle of La Liga this season.

Jose Mourinho, on the other hand, reached the first UEFA final in his storied career, winning two Champions League titles, one Europa League title and one in his last four Europa League finals. A Europa League title.
Gianluca Mancini and Paulo Dybala provided brief moments of quality and counter-attacks in the 35th minute after both sides conceded just two goals in the first half. Bryan Kristante saved Ivan Rakitic and Mancini passed the ball to Mancini, who immediately played a through ball to split Sevilla’s right-hand defense , and sent Dybala into the goal. Dybala gave Roma the lead with a left-footed shot past Morocco World Cup hero Yassine Bounou.

Roma tried to defend their lead early in the second half but failed to attempt a shot from the 36th to the 67th minute. Sevilla stepped up the pressure (multiple crosses) and forced a serious error 10 minutes after the restart. Jesús Navas sent a fine ball over the top of the six-yard box and although Mancini was standing on Jusuf Ennesiri’s right to clear it, the ball broke off his knee and crashed into the Scored his own goal.
Twelve minutes later, Bounu was back in the scoring hero role as Tammy Abraham seemed sure to put Roma back in the lead with a flick of the ball inside the six-man area. Except for Bunu who blocked Abram’s shot with his body and breakthrough, the red and white jerseys went into a frenzy before the ball was finally cleared.

Penalties were disallowed for both sides as the second half progressed. Sevilla were initially awarded a penalty after Lucas Ocampos fell to the ground in the penalty area, but the penalty was invalidated through video review. Roma failed again at the start after Fernando blocked a cross with his arm.

With extra-time extended from 120 to 131 minutes, the penalty shootout will decide the winner of the 2022-23 Europa League. Sevilla triumphed after Mancini and Roger Ibanez were rejected, laying the groundwork for Gonzalo Montiel to seal Sevilla’s deal, just as he did at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as Argentina did.

Main storyline and star players
It has been another underwhelming season in Serie A for Roma as they failed to qualify for the Champions League for the fourth consecutive season. However, a win in Budapest would see them return to UEFA’s top flight for the first time since 2018/19. In typical Mourinho form, they conceded few goals (37 in 37 league games) but struggled to score enough (48) to climb further up the table. Paulo Dybala leads with 11 Serie A goals (plus four in the Europa League, and four from Lorenzo Pellegrini), with former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham adding eight. one (and one more).

Speaking of a disappointing domestic season, Sevilla are 11th in La Liga with one game left (they can move up to 7th on the final matchday). Sevilla have been in charge of three different managers this season, with Julen Lopetegui in charge until early October before naming his successor.

June 1 – Sevilla won a record-extending seventh Europa League title 4-1 from the penalty spot against AS Roma following a bad-tempered and theatrical final. They remain unbeaten in Europa League finals.

The Spanish side reconfirmed their love affair with the Europa League and their strength and resolve could not be broken, not even by José Mourinho and his antics in a final that descended into 146 minutes of scrappy football with 13 yellow cards in total, the most shown in a match in the history of all the major European competitions.

Voted man of the match, Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bonou ultimately proved to be the hero with a pivotal penalty save from Gianluca Mancini. Roma’s number 23 was the anti-hero with an own goal and penalty miss.

For days Mourinho, once upon a time The Special One, had been blowing smoke around the fitness of his star player Paulo Dybala, so it was fitting that the Argentinean opened the score in the 34th minute with a fine finish. Latching on to a Mancini ball from deep, Dybala’s finish was crisp and prompted wild celebrations among the 20,000 AS Roma fans who had travelled to the Hungarian capital.

Sevilla could feel aggrieved as Cristante had wrestled Ivan Rakitic off the ball, but on points AS Roma merited their lead. Spiritual masters of the Europa League, the Spanish were never the irresistible force of previous rounds and mustered just a single chance in the first half when Rakitic’s low screamer ricocheted off the woodwork in the fifth minute of injury time.

It was reflective of a match that was predictably intense and highly contested with the Romans in a defensive formation but Sevilla making little of their possession. This was hardly a clash of styles, but, as the first half drew to a close, tempers increasingly flared with Mourinho in theatre mode on the touchline. The match quickly became scrappy.

With fresh forces in the shape of Erik Lamela and Jesus Suso and a goal down, Sevilla streamed forward after the break. Soon they had found a way in and were level. In the 54th minute, Mancini kneed a cross from veteran full-back Jesus Navas into his own net. It was a goal Sevilla desperately needed.

Mourinho implored his side to remain calm, but the Spanish, rejuvenated, sensed their moment. Yet, Roma came close when an almighty scramble ensued near Bounou’s goal line.

In the 75th minute, Sevilla had a penalty overturned and minutes later Roma claimed a spot kick of their own when Fernando handled the ball in his box.

Substitute Andrea Bellotti should have won the match but Bounou got a fingertip to his volley. And so the players and teams dragged themselves towards penalties, fractured by eventless prolongations where the fear of committing the crucial mistake reigned. Mourinho kept on contesting every refereeing decision, but the war of attrition had only one ending.

In the shootout, Sevilla prevailed with Montiel, who also scored the winning penalty in the World Cup, converting the deciding penalty kick and handing Mourinho his first defeat in six European finals. It’s the second time in a row that Sevilla defeated Italian opposition to claim the Europa League. In 2020, they overcame Inter Milan.
