Why study Reconstruction?
Reconstruction was a Black-led movement that sought to strengthen the rule of law and have more access to justice. And this movement advocates economic equality and steps progress toward strengthening democracy.
Examining and having to explain Reconstruction would assist a new generation of learners who would challenge the status quo.

Reconstruction’s Revelatory History That Has Been Buried:Â
The Dunning school published the first scholarly book on Reconstruction. The theory says that giving black people rights was the biggest mistake in history because they are incapable of participating intelligently in political democracy. Racial Practice That Still Operates In Modern-Day Society
Except for Native Americans, who are still considered citizens of their tribal sovereignties, the principle of birthright citizenship is still with the American people. It is written in the constitution in the 14th amendment and brags for American exceptionalism. No country in Europe recognises birthright citizenship. A non-American is more likely to be unemployed, and there are specific jobs where people of colour are over-represented, the lowest paying ones, for instance, food servers, porters, tailors, dry cleaning workers and farmers.

Aftermath of Reconstruction
-Most states did not accept black people as equal citizens even after the end of slavery after five years. –The populist movement in 19
th century did try to bring white Americans and black farmers together and failed.
-When the troops left the south in 1877, the state legislature quickly passed the black codes and set criteria for voter qualification. The violations of black Africans were essentially going ignored.
-Inflation became such severe thousands of southern starved to death. They lost
everything they owned, even the loaf of bread, clothes and land.
-Failed of Freedmen’s Bureau.
-Blacks ended up having to fight for civil rights on their own. And white Americans lost interest in Reconstruction by the mids the 1870s
