NSDL – The Mechanism
NSDL’s primary function is to allow investors to open an account where they can store shares. You may compare NSDL to a bank – NSDL accepts shares and stores them – while banks open savings or current accounts, NSDL opens Demat accounts. Not only share market investors but banks and brokers/ Depository Participants can also open accounts with NSDL. However, if investors want to open an NSDL account, they cannot do so directly. To open an NSDL account, you have to approach a Depository Participant (DP), which facilitates the NSDL account opening process. The DP serves as the intermediary between NSDL and investors.
CDSL NSDL is committed to providing a fair, transparent, and highly reliable depository service for clients. It’s for obvious reasons that we are the market leaders in providing efficient, expeditious, and customer-friendly depository services. We endeavor to transform ourselves into a one-stop shop for all securities-related activities of the investors.
What is an NSDL Demat Account?
NSDL Demat account refers to an account maintained and managed by the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). Whenever an investor places a delivery buy order, the shares are credited to the investor’s NSDL Demat account in T+2 days. Similarly, when an investor sells the shares, the shares are debited from the investor’s NSDL account in T+2 days. In India, DP-cum-brokers like 5paisa facilitate NSDL Demat account opening.
Your Demat Account is a place where all the shares that you purchase are held in digital form. To open a Demat account, you need to approach a Depository Participant (DP). They are like banking agents for depository institutions. In the case of NSDL, the DPs can be stock brokers, banks, financial institutions or custodial services or any other participant approved by SEBI. You can use NSDL’s website to locate the broker nearest to your location.
What are the Advantages of the NSDL Demat Account?
- The Chances of Wrong Deliveries Are Nil
NSDL stores all shares in the Dematerialized format, allowing investors to verify the equity shares, bonds, ETFs or mutual funds purchased through them. Hence, the chances of wrong deliveries are zero. Since all shares are held in demat form, NSDL is highly beneficial for those who live in areas where physical share certificates could not be delivered due to poor connectivity or have difficulty with handling large numbers of paper certificates.
- Less Paperwork, More Convenience
Physical shares are prone to damage, theft or mutilation. Hence opening a NSDL Demat account could be the solution for you. Through dematerialisation of your physical share certificates, this account eliminates risks of theft or loss. Additionally, it will reduce time and expenses of issuing physical certificates.Â
