Montemaggio is a family-owned business which is situated in Radda in the center of the Chianti Classico region. It is located where an antique tower from the fourteenth century formerly stood above the ancient Roman road connecting Siena and Florence in Italy. Montemaggio makes “Terroir” wines which means they are wines of the highest caliber and this is one of the reasons for you to visit Chinati Winery.  The name Montemaggio is taken from “Monte Maggiore” (Big Mountain), which means an elevated position.

Montemaggio follows the concept of a very high-quality “Terroir” wine and they make sure to check the quality of wine in every bottle so that every customer gets a very special product. The wines are planted with a very high density per hectare (6250 plants/hectare in some vineyards). They produce a lower quantity of grapes per hectare (35-60 Ql/hectare, which depends on the vintage), by regulating it through pruning and selection techniques. During the harvest, every bunch undergoes selection in the vineyard and later again in the vinery to make sure the best wine is provided to the customers. Harvest is carried out manually when the grapes become perfectly ripe. This is the reason why Fattoria di Montemaggio’s wines are 100% hand-made, and they preserve all the quality of the elements that are a part of the land where they have been cultivated.

The three most common methods of wine training systems are cordone speronato, alberello, and guyot. These along with other factors such as exposure (south – southwest), the slopes, the micro-climate, the soil and the hard and accurate work done are what guarantee the production of excellent and authentic Tuscan wines. You can also check the latest photos of their vineyards on their website to check the beauty of this place. Montemaggio is a certified organic estate since 2009, which means they produce pure organic wine.  The entity practices organic agriculture and thus cultivation is carried out with the maximum respect for nature, without introducing any foreign or chemical element that can damage the environment. Therefore, it may be argued that all of Fattoria di Montemaggio’s wines are created by hand and retain the highest quality of the natural components of the soil where they were grown.

A map of the “Captains of the Guelph Party” from 1560 that is kept in the Podesteria di Radda also depicts Montemaggio (City Hall). The name Montemaggio is derived from “Monte Maggiore,” which means “Big Mountain” and denotes the area’s elevation.  The estate is located at a high elevation of 450 to 600 meters above sea level and spans an area of 70 hectares (approximately 190 acres) of vineyards, olive groves, and woodlands. It is a member of the Consortium of Chianti Classico. The 8 hectares (20 acres) of vines are located in the middle of the estate and have a significant southwest exposure. The entity offers a wide range of wine such as chianti classico riserva docg, chianti classico, torre de montemaggio IGT, etc.
