In 2020, because Independence Day will fall on a weekend, the Friday before Independence Day will be a Federal Holiday. In addition, it will be a State Holiday for 46 states, including Washington DC, as Massachusetts, New York, Texas and Rhode Island observe Saturday holidays on Saturdays in 2021, if Independence Day falls on a Sunday the following Monday is a Federal Holiday, and all other states except Texas observe it as a State Holiday.
Independence Day in New York is a Federal Holiday, so not only are schools and libraries closed, but also most state and federal offices. There will also be no mail delivery.
History of Independence Day
The Declaration of Independence was signed by the United States of America on July 4, 1776.
The Fourth of July is the official anniversary of U.S. Independence, even though the Declaration was not signed until August.
Independence Day was not celebrated until after the War of 1812. Although Philadelphians celebrated the first anniversary of their independence with spontaneous street celebrations, it wasn’t until 1791 that the term “Independence Day”, as we know it today, first appeared.

In 1870 the U.S. Congress declared Independence Day a non-paid federal holiday. It wasn’t until 1942 that Congress made Independence Day a federal paid holiday.
