All three MediaPad tablets are approximately as powerful as a two-year-old flagship phone, which is to be expected for a $300+ tablet. Each phone includes a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel LCD screen, a Huawei Kirin 960 engine, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a MicroSD slot for extra memory). Surprisingly, they have LTE connectivity built-in, although it is deactivated in the United States.
The entire machine runs on Google’s latest Android 8.0 Oreo operating system. However, Huawei has made it look more like iOS by smoothing off otherwise harsh edges and removing the app drawer altogether. Nevertheless, except that Huawei’s skin is already behind Google’s latest security patches, I haven’t had any serious concerns with it.
What about Huawei tablets?
The MediaPad M5 and M5 Pro include a 13-megapixel back camera with f/2.2 aperture (no flash) and an 8-megapixel front camera. I’ve done some little testing and found that both cameras operate admirably, albeit neither is particularly spectacular in demanding photo situations. Video chatting should also be possible with the front selfie camera.
The MediaPad M5 tablets have a slim profile, like other iPad competitors, with brushed metal unibodies and a glass front that tapers beautifully at the sides. As a result, they have the same luxury look and feel like an iPad, Huawei, or Galaxy Tab. A row of dots adorns the top and bottom margins of the back. They’re speakers (four on the larger models, two on the 8.4-inch), and owing to some Harman Kardon tuning, they sound about as lovely as you’ll get on a tablet.
Even at high volumes, you won’t hear much distortion. They’re great for watching Netflix or listening to music on the road, but you’ll need an excellent Bluetooth speaker to get the party started. If you wish to listen to music, you’ll also need Bluetooth headphones. The fingerprint-sensing home button on the Huawei tablets works nicely, but be cautious if you enable fingerprint authentication. If you don’t use your tablet for three days, you’ll have to enter a PIN to unlock it, and you’ll only have five attempts.
