The Mexican flag is also quite eye-catching with its bright red and green colour scheme with the eagle crest in the centre.
While most of us have seen this flag before, learning how to draw the Mexican flag can be challenging. This can be incredibly challenging when the flag is flapping in the wind!
Don’t worry; this guide will show you everything you need to know when taking on this challenge.
How to Draw The Mexican Flag
Step 1
It would be easy to draw a rectangle for the outline while you learn to draw the Mexican flag, but we’re taking it further in this guide!
This flag will wave in the wind, making it more challenging and a more dynamic image.
First, draw a slightly curved vertical line for the left edge of the flag. Next, add two short curved lines at the top of this flag.
Next, draw a curved line at the bottom that connects to another short one. We will then connect these parts with some curvy vertical lines.
The line at the base also extends a little further into a wavy line. This might not sound very clear, but it becomes more apparent if you refer precisely to the reference image when drawing!
Step 2
In this part of your Mexican flag design, you will complete the outline of the flag. To do this, we’ll add some more wavy rectangular vertical shapes you’ve drawn in this guide.
There will be three of these shapes that we will add in this part, and the third one will be smaller and slightly rounder than the others.
Once you’ve replicated the shapes in the reference image, we can start drawing details on the flag.
Step 3
The flag we will draw is divided into three colour sections, so in this part of our guide on how to draw the Mexican flag, we will start by drawing these sections.
Usually, this would be as simple as drawing two vertical lines on the flag, but let’s consider that the fabric will flow as you draw.
With that in mind, and considering the reference image, we draw some curved vertical lines on the flag that curve to match the flow of the fabric.
This can get confusing, so follow the reference image closely to reproduce the look.
Step 4
One of the distinctive features of the Mexican flag is the coat of arms in the centre. This coat of arms consists of a crown with an eagle above it.
We will focus on the crown for this part of your Mexican flag design. You can design the leaves of this wreath by drawing a few small rounds and pointed shapes that form a curved shape.
Once you’ve designed this crown, you can complete the design in the next step, so let’s move on!
Step 5
We can complete the flag icon in this step of our guide on how to draw the Mexican flag.
As mentioned in the previous step, the symbol consists of a crown with an eagle above it, and we will draw this eagle in this fifth step.
Facing the left, this eagle has a stylized design. If you are designing this for your flag, consider enlarging the reference image to reference when recreating this look.
Once you have drawn this eagle, you have completed all the details in this flag and are ready for some colours to complete it!
Before proceeding, you can also draw some details. We already mentioned many iconic aspects of Mexico, so you could draw a background with some of those aspects!
Step 6
This final step of this Mexican flag design will leave you with some fantastic colours.
As we mentioned earlier, the Mexican flag has green on the left and red on the right, with white in the middle, but you can make these blocks of colour more interesting by using different shades of each colour.
Even the white area can be made more dynamic by adding some grey.
You can express your creativity in countless ways with the colours and art mediums you use, so have fun and see what happens!
