A woman’s body goes through innumerable changes in a lifetime, it evolves over a lifetime as well as with every monthly cycle of menstruation, if you keenly understand a woman’s mind you will notice a few changes are happening before the onset of menstruation and also after the onset of menstruation. The stages before the onset of menstruation are what we popularly know as PMS. PMS is often characterized by irritability, mood swings and also lack of interest in doing things. That is because during the stage of PMS the female’s body is preparing itself to serve as a nursing ground for the egg which is yet to meet the sperm and fertilize into a baby. But when there isn’t any kind of fertilization happening with the sperm the body then begins to clean up what it has prepared for the process of fertilization, the shedding of the endometrial lining and the release of the unfertilized egg from the body every 28 days is what is defined as the process of menstruation.

The most common problem that young women across the globe have been facing is that of postpartum depression, before addressing the problem of postpartum let us understand the reason behind its existence. Postpartum technically happens because of the change in the levels of the feminine hormone, the hormones produced by the ovaries upon the signal given by the brain during the period of gestation and the period of delivery are much more than the normal cycle of menstruation. Hence the sudden drop in the levels of hormones after the process of delivery may be a little difficult for the female to adjust to the changes in the body.” explained one of the doctors at a popular IVF centre in Punjab.

The first and the most important thing is that we as women need to acknowledge that postpartum depression is just a phase and this is all happening because of the stress that the body has gone through that is preparing for childbirth and the process of delivery. Thus acknowledge the fact and don’t be hard on yourself to arrive at conclusions.

Other reasons for POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

  1. ANXIETY – The woman may need time to recover from the postpartum depression as the body has undergone a significant change, giving birth to a child is equal to breaking ten bones in the body thus the woman needs to accept the reality and move on with the cooperation of her family members.
  2. SLEEPLESSNESS – Newborn children have no ways to express themselves apart from opening their mouths out loud and crying, thus it is always advisable for the parents to express themselves loudly by crying out loud hence the parents both of them should take turns handling the baby because bringing in babies is not just the responsibility of the parents but the entire family because he/she is a member of the entire family and not just the parents.
  3. POOR DIET AND NUTRITION – poor diet and nutrition are one of the reasons for postpartum depression because it is the responsibility of the family members to see that the dietary requirements of the mother are met, operational costs differ between places like the cost of test tube baby in Punjab is different from that in Chennai but cost should not be a factor while considering the welfare of the mother and the childÂ
