A concrete driveway starts with base and subgrade preparation. This includes removing any vegetation and ensuring a stable soil foundation. A class-5 gravel base at least 4 inches thick is then placed, graded, and compacted.
Then, rebar or heavy-duty mesh is laid to support the base and keep the driveway strong as traffic increases. If you have a steep slope, consider adding a steel reinforcement to contain cracks in the pavement.
Once the base is in place, concrete can be poured. The slab should be at least four inches thick for a standard passenger car driveway and five inches for a slab supporting oversized loads.
For proper drainage, your new driveway should be sloping towards the street at a minimum of one percent per foot. During pouring, it is important to ensure that the concrete is firmly seated in the form and that it remains smooth as it cures.
Before parking vehicles on your new driveway, make sure that it is completely cured. It is also recommended that you protect it from extreme weather conditions for at least three days to allow the concrete to dry and prevent damage.
