Michael Olise’s career trajectory has been temporarily altered following a hamstring injury sustained at the Under-21 European Championship. Now Crystal Palace must manage his recovery while keeping pace with pre-season preparations and future competitive fixtures.
Hodgson remains confident that Hodgson can return to peak form, and expects him to be available at the start of this season.
Chelsea and Manchester City remain interested in Olise
Michael Olise is one of the Premier League’s finest talents, but his future at Crystal Palace remains uncertain due to an injury incurred while representing France at the Under-21 European Championships. While racing towards scoring, Olise collided with Norway goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson and suffered a severe tear to his hamstring.

He will miss the start of pre-season training and could potentially miss all or a substantial portion of this season, which means he could miss up to 100 games altogether.
Olise hails from Chelsea’s academy and the Blues have expressed an interest in signing him this summer. Manchester City may see Olise as an ideal replacement for Riyad Mahrez – another 21-year-old potentially seen by Chelsea as ideal talent.
The Eagles signed Olise from Reading for approximately PS8m in 2021, and now hope to keep him at Selhurst Park beyond this transfer window. Roy Hodgson believes he is an outstanding talent who should remain part of their squad.

Hodgson is unsure on Olise’s future
Michael Olise’s injury has cast serious doubt over his availability for Crystal Palace this season. After suffering a hamstring strain while representing France at U21 Euros, his recovery will take time – Hodgson acknowledged this. Without Michael available, Hodgson admitted the winger won’t be available for selection for some time.

Olise’s injury has significantly hampered his club’s pre-season preparations. Friendly matches were meant to provide opportunities to fine-tune its squad; now adjustments must be made as a result of this setback.
Hodgson has made clear that his club will go all-out to retain Olise and Eberechi Eze. According to TalkSPORT sources, they aim to extend Eze’s contract until 2025; however, there may be competition from potential suitors for his signature.
Olise’s injury
After an impressive first full season with the club, Olise looked set to earn recognition from players’ players of the year. His two goals and 11 assists over 37 Premier League matches made him the division’s leading assister and made him appear comfortable within England’s top flight competition.
As soon as he arrived to represent France in Toulon under-21 tournament, however, tragedy struck again: He sustained a torn hamstring against Norway and may not return before October.
Olise is an exceptional talent who can present any defense with problems, and should start playing regularly sooner rather than later. Patrick Vieira has successfully integrated Olise into Palace first team since seeing off interest from City to sign him for PS8m this summer. Olise can operate both right and left flank, providing direct play that will test any defense.
Olise’s return
Olise played an instrumental role for Palace as they avoided relegation to the Premier League last season, earning him his manager the club’s Players’ Player of the Year Award. With three years left on his contract and interest from other clubs, his services may well remain required in 2019.
Defending wingers can be challenging due to their speed and agility, creating havoc for opposing defences with his speed and dribbling skills that often result in fouls being committed on him, not to mention the threat they present with their dead ball delivery.
Olise will attempt to return for training this week; his availability for the start of the 2022/23 campaign will depend on how well he progresses. Olise’s injury will have serious repercussions for France as it means missing preseason training and potentially their opening match against Norway on August 3. However, Hodgson remains confident he will be fit enough for France’s season opener against Sheffield United on August 12. If he does feature, Olise would hope to add his nine assists from last season to his total of nine assists from 2022/23 campaign.
