Baby steps of Embroidery
Embroidery originated in China and near Eastern countries, and slowly this art spread all over the world. Likewise, Byzantium and Persia was having this art and were using this on their clothing. Enormous designs of animals and human figures were crafted on clothes. From there, Islam started overtaking societies to have their skills. But in many regions, animal designs were not accepted, instead of that florals and plants were much more preferred. As mobilization started and people started exploring the world, they understood that embroidery was one of the higher-class status symbols. It was widely used on handkerchiefs, flags, slippers, shoes, tunics, robes, leather belts, pouches, uniforms, and many more. Mostly it was popular in Cairo, Istanbul, and Damascus. At that time embroidery was done with gold and silver threads.   Â
An ancient technique used for Embroidery
Do you remember the importance of your grandmother’s sewing?
Our grandmothers used to do embroidery on bedsheets, handkerchiefs, or any fabric they got to decorate the house with a personal touch. But they did this just to kill their old age time. But this art has become a necessity for us in today’s time. As it gives a little bit of uniqueness to our clothing. Also, this unique art is rare to find in terms of authenticity, whether it is actually hand-woven or machine. As handwoven embroidery’s look is different from the machine, in terms of thread, patterns, and a lot more.Â
Earlier damask stitch was used to decorate curtains and mirror covers. But before the stitching process, a skilled artist used to draw a shape on the fabric. And these designs were mainly based on themes of nature such as birds and flowers. Damask stitched fabric is mostly worn on special occasions. In Punja also this work is famous with the name, Phulkari meaning flower work. It was majorly done on shawls and dupattas.  Â
Next is chain stitch, which is comparatively easy to do. There is another embroidery that is similar to chain stitch is Kurar. Furthermore, cross stitch is mostly used in the Middle East, to craft wedding dresses with bold beautiful embroidery.Â
Another technique is coaching, a stitching technique used for decorating the fabric across the Islamic regions.Â
And, Herringbone stitch is widely used in Afghanistan to embroider bride and groom’s smocks, especially of red, green, or white stitchery on a white background.Â
Significance
Each embroidery holds special significance, for instance, according to the Islamic world a tree symbolizes, growth to maturity, death, and rebirth.  Â
Modern touch
There was a time when embroidery was done by hand, but these days any design you think of can come to life quickly with the help of a machine. But the real essence lies in hand embroidery.Â
Machine embroidery is generally done with the help of rayon threads, polyester also cotton threads can be used. New machines have been developed through which you can design free-motion embroidery. These designs are used in home furnishing, dressmaking, quilting, and many more. Machine embroidery has many advantages such as any design can be crafted on a piece of fabric within no time. Moreover, bulk production can be done with the same embroidery numerous times. But this is not the case in hand embroidery.     Â
Calligraphy
Along with shapes, calligraphy is also done on fabric and especially in Islamic countries. People have a love for calligraphy and there are still many artists that do hand calligraphy on fabrics. Mostly they are written in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Ottoman. Many flags, wall hangings, and other things are made. Mostly silver threads are used to sew on the fabric. Â
