When Ragnarok comes, who do you want with you?

In the original games, Kratos was never the kind of person who had a lot of friends or companions. But by the time the 2018 God of War game comes out, he’s grown up a lot and is traveling with his son Atreus. God of War: Ragnarok builds on this feature and gives players a good range of companions to choose from.

Even though many of these characters only show up for one or two missions, they all serve different purposes and add a lot of flavor to the story by showing how the other characters interact. You have a total of eight allies in God of War: Ragnarok who help you fight, and when you first meet them, they are all interesting in some way.

Thrud

Thrud

Thrud, who is the daughter of the Norse god Thor, is a major character in God of War: Ragnarok. Her relationship with Atreus and Thor is used in some very interesting ways by the game’s creators. Thrud’s design is also very clever. Her head is full of orange hair that is fluffy and almost looks like a lion’s mane.

Unfortunately, as a fighting partner, Thrud leaves a lot to be desired. She is more of a fighter like her dad, and the difference between her and Atreus, who is a ranger, makes for interesting fights. Unfortunately, Thrud is constantly outmatched by the other companion Atreus gets, Ingrid. This sentient sword is better at building up stun meters than Thrud, and Thrud’s damage output isn’t enough to move her up this list.

Sindri

Sindri

When you play as Atreus, Sindri is the first friend you get in God of War: Ragnarok. This dwarf is funny, especially when his fear of germs stands out against the violence and mess of battle. Even though he’s a well-known character, he’s not very good at fighting.

Atreus is already good at fighting from a distance, so Sindri’s random collection of bombs that can be thrown doesn’t help him all that much. Sindri does decent damage and can help build stun meters, but he is not a good combat companion because he doesn’t have Runic Attack and doesn’t help you. You can still have funny talks with him and learn interesting things about the dwarven brothers, so that’s always nice.

Angrboda

Angrboda

In God of War Ragnarok, Angrboda is a character that is worth getting to know. She comes from a long line of Giants, so Atreus can learn more about that part of his family history through her. She is written very well and is a nice contrast to Kratos, who does everything he can to stop Atreus from being obsessed with his fate.

Angrboda uses colorful Giant magic in battle, and her runic attack is to call a falcon. This does a lot of damage and builds up a lot of stun meters. She stops many creatures from attacking, giving Atreus the chance to kill them from afar. All of these things make Angrboda a great friend for Atreus, and the fact that the battlefield looks like it just finished the Holi Festival is a fun visual contrast to the dark atmosphere of the nine realms.

Brok

Brok

Brok, the other half of the blacksmith brothers, is definitely the better of the two. His regular attack isn’t very good. He throws bomb-like things at enemies. These attacks are kind of slow, so they don’t help much when things are bad. Brok’s runic attack is what makes him stand out.

When you hold down the square button on the controller, Brok will create a blast around himself that stuns enemies for a long time. Even though Brok isn’t one of the best combat allies, this runic attack makes him a good ally on its own. His snarky attitude is always fun to see, which makes him a joy to be around and keeps him from being annoying.

Thor

Thor

When you play as Atreus, you get to work with Thor on a mission, which is the exact opposite of what you would expect. The first boss fight, where Thor is introduced, does a lot to build up the tension, since you’re always on edge when you’re with Thor. But the God of Thunder is written so well that it’s a joy to watch him, even if it seems like he’s never on your side.

Unlike many of the other pets on this list, Thor can’t be controlled. During the mission, Atreus controls the intelligent sword Ingrid. Which means that Thor will help you in any way he wants. Even though he isn’t the most reliable or common friend, he is definitely a threat. He goes right through enemies, and the game’s use of him in the one mission he goes on is perfect. Definitely, the time you spend with Thor is short but sweet.

Ingrid

Ingrid

As was already said, Atreus gets a sword named Ingrid that can think for itself. This sword isn’t as realistic as Kratos’s or as comforting as Angrboda’s. But it does a great job of capturing the whimsy of the Nordic lands. It’s a classic sentient object that seems a bit mischievous and more like a pet than a weapon. Luckily, Ingrid is also very good at fighting.

It can keep enemies busy while you shoot arrows at them with Atreus, giving you a lot more time to hurt them before they can get close. The runic attack is a quick series of air slashes that breaks up combos and builds up a lot of stun meter. This is the best companion you can get for Atreus because it goes well with how he fights. After all, who doesn’t like a funny, smart weapon?

Freya

Freya

Freya was an important character in the first game. And since 2018, fans have been looking forward to seeing where her story goes. She is one of the most complex characters because she has doubts, ideals, and grudges. That makes her a great conversationalist and storyteller, but luckily she’s also a great fighter.

She can use both sigil and sonic arrows, the same as Atreus. She also has weapons that she can use to hurt people up close. Freya works well with Kratos’s strength, giving you another way to fight. Her sigil arrows also make your elemental damage more powerful, which is great. Her runic attacks are also some of the best because they stun enemies long enough for you to unleash hell on them. Even though Freya is great, the best friend is…

Atreus

Atreus

Atreus has a much bigger role than he did in the last game. And in many parts of the story, you can even control him. Obviously, the fact that he is Kratos’s son and that their relationship is complicated but loving adds a lot to their friendship. Having your son help you fight feels almost heartwarming, especially after some of the game’s story points.

The people who made Slope Game deserve credit for making Atreus such a strong companion. He can use both types of arrows, just like Freya. And he can stun enemies for a long time to make R3 takedowns possible. His runic attacks are just as strong. And they mostly aim to fill the stun meter and give you a chance to strike. After all, Atreus’s skill in battle shows how well Kratos has trained him.
