Game over screens are frustrating for players who are trying hard to finish an area. But some games like to mess with fans by giving fake game overs.
There is nothing worse for a gamer than spending hours on a game and then getting a “game over” screen for the smallest mistake. Even though times have changed and checkpoints are in place to keep people from giving up in a fit of rage. Some games still make it harder on purpose just to see how much gamers can take.
Since video games started telling stories like movies and exploring different human emotions, there has also been a desire for more attention while trying to connect more with the person holding the controller. The fake game over screens are an example of this.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
Hideo Kojima is famous for changing how games are meant to be played. So it’s no surprise that a few of his games are on this list. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was definitely ahead of its time in terms of its story, gameplay, and in-game mechanics, but the last few parts of the game take some strange turns.
Colonel Campbell’s bad behavior gets worse and worse until he tells the player to quit the game. Those who do not listen get a surprise during the Raiden battle. The game shows a white screen and a fake game that says “Fission Mailed” over it. Players would soon find out (without giving anything away). That they still have control of Snake and need to get to the end of the game.
Hitman: Blood Money
Hitman is known for its quiet kills, but the players of Hitman: Blood Money had no idea that legendary agent 47 would be killed in his own way. In the last few chapters of the game, or more specifically in the “Requiem” mission. Agent 47 is told about his plan and decides to go his own way.
But while he was listening to the briefing, his loyal and trustworthy commandeer, Diane, crept up behind him and poisoned him. As the credits roll and the funeral scenes for Agent 47 begin, players are asked to match the pop-up controls to speed up the assassin’s heart rate. If it worked, the notorious hitman would wake up from his sleep and kill everyone who came to his funeral. If you don’t do this, you’ll get a non-canon ending in which the agent stays dead.
Metal Gear Solid 3
Hijdeo Kojima doesn’t like to do the same things over and over. So the fake game-over scenario in Metal Gear Solid 3 is more of an improvement. As with how the game is played in a unique way, the game developer mastermind manages to make the troll a part of the game.
Players are shown the death pill, which is a bolus that lets Snake temporarily act like he is dead. But the events turn out to be that scene where the game forces the player to use up their last choice in order to move forward. Once you take the pill, the game shows a fake game on the screen. But you can still open your inventory and use the pill. Also, the game is over for real this time if the tablet is not eaten within a certain amount of time.
Lollipop Chainsaw
Juliet Starling, the main character of Lollipop Chainsaw, was too sexualized. And she ran amok through the streets of a made-up California where zombies were everywhere. But in Lollipop Chainsaw’s defense, it knew exactly what it wanted to be: a mindless, weird, and bloody high school zombie survival game.
Juliet Starling is ready to meet her high school crush, who is waiting for her in a nearby park. She has no idea that zombies are rising up. But Juliet gets there in time to see the love of her teenage life being torn apart by a swarm of meat-hungry zombies, and that’s the end of the story. Or so it says. After that, the game goes on with Juliet carrying her boyfriend’s head tied to her behind (to make it sound more kid-friendly) and causing trouble wherever she goes.
Dead Space 2
The Dead Space series is one of those well-known ones from the late 2000s. That has been remembered long after its action-packed days. Dead Space 2 was the second part of the game. And it was able to bring back the magic of the first one. It also had a small twist at the end.
In the game’s supposed last cut scene, Isaac is left to die on The Sprawl, a space station. Isaac falls to the floor to accept his bad luck as his reactors completely melt down. and his life support systems stop working. About 20 seconds before the credits end, Ellie crashes through the roof like a knight in shining armor to save Isaac, letting him finish the game like the hero he is.
Control
Taking into account what was going on in the world at the time. Remedy Entertainment’s 2020 game was the perfect release for gamers. Jesse Faden, the new head of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), has a hard time getting rid of the Hiss, a supernatural being that messes with people’s minds.
But Jesse has a lot of superpowers and a gun that breaks most of the rules of physics. This puts her in a position where the powers of the Hiss take over in the last few hours of the game. As the end credits roll, something doesn’t look right. It turns out that the Hiss has completely tricked both Jesse and the player into thinking the game is over. Jesse beats the fake game over, stops the power of the entity. And makes her way to the final boss fight.
God Of War: Ragnarok
God of War: Ragnarok needs a proper start. The 2022 game improved on everything its predecessor had done. And it was praised by everyone and sold a lot of copies all over the world. When Kratos meets Thor for the first time, the game tries to do something different. Thor has Kratos in his death grip, and players are encouraged to tap the button. That pops up on the screen to save the bald god killer.
Even though Kratos tried so hard, Thor’s power was too much for him. He died, and the screen showed “Game Over.” Even before the players can figure out what just happened, Thor tells Kratos through his lines that he “is not done” with him yet and brings him back to battle. A shocking moment in Happy Wheels game that everyone will remember.
