Decking can make any house or business look better, and it’s easy to find the perfect decking length you want if you know where to look and how to shop around. Here are three tips to help you find the right decking length for you: 1) see what’s available in your area, 2) ask your salesperson at the store if they’re able to order different lengths, 3) check online or even at local hardware stores if the store that sells your decking doesn’t have exactly what you want.

Think About How You Will Install Your Deck

The first thing to consider when deciding on decking lengths is whether or not you will be installing your deck in sections. If your deck has a single straight edge, then it’s likely that you will be installing it in one piece. If not, then you’ll need to decide how many sections of wood you want. The length of each section needs to add up to the total length of your deck. For example, if you want your deck to measure 10 feet by 15 feet, then each section should be either 2 feet by 5 feet or 3 feet by 5 feet. Once you’ve figured out the size of your decking, you can determine what size lumber you’ll need to buy. The second tip for determining your decking lengths is considering what type of boards you’re using: tongue-and-groove boards have less waste than side-glued boards because they allow for overlaps in installation while side-glued boards do not. Tongue and groove boards are generally more expensive than side-glued boards so keep this information in mind as well. If you don’t know what type of board to use and don’t care about potential waste from overlaps, side glued board are often cheaper than tongue and groove boards because there is less material used per board foot.

Know What Measurements Are Needed For Each Section

Decks are typically made up of sections that are either 1’8 or 2’4. If your deck will have stairs, you’ll need one extra section. The length of each section depends on how wide you want the boards to be. For example, if you want boards that are 1 wide, each section should be 28. If you want a board width of 3, then each section should be 84. Add an inch for end caps and a quarter inch for space between boards. For example, if you want boards that are 3 wide and they’re spaced 3/8 apart, then each section needs to be 33-1/4. To find out how many boards you need in total, divide the number of sections by 8 (because there are 8 boards per 1 foot).

Consider the Width of The Material

Use the width of your material as a guide when choosing a length. If you are using 2 x 4s, for example, and you want your decking boards to be 16 inches wide, then you would need at least an 8-foot length. Decks can get wider or longer as they go up and down stairs. For example, if your deck is going up one flight of stairs, it could use more than an 8-foot long piece of 2 x 4s. If it is going up two flights of stairs, it may need 10 feet worth of board. If you have one flight of stairs or less on your deck plan, then most likely all that is needed is a 4-foot long piece of wood.
